They do such a good job taking care of the animals each day

And I haven’t mentioned it but we are getting lots of eggs (2-4 a day!) from our four chickens (for the past month or more). The Spy asked “Have you even taken a picture of our eggs?”  Me, “No, not yet.” The Spy, (looking shocked) “Whats wrong with you??!!!” Hahahah so I guess an egg and chicken photo shoot needs to go on the to-do list! hA!

October nook

The most recent art show at my school’s art gallery was very photogenic and (I think) very October. Paper sculptures by Jiangmei Wu:

Love these! From the artists statement:

I grew up in China in the Seventies when resources were extremely scarce. Most of the Chinese children at that time didn’t have toys – we played with simple things we made with our hands.  We played games with shuttlecocks made of feathers and bottle caps, slingshots made of rubber bands and wooden sticks, and of course, airplanes and balloons made of paper. Indeed, we made all sorts of objects from paper: balls, baskets, dollhouses, bird figurines, and other objects. Paper was a common commodity, but it was not abundant and cheap during that time. We would fold and make objects using all kinds of paper from old newspapers, old magazines and used notebooks. Since I was a child, I have always been fascinated by the art and the science of the folding paper. Paper folding seems to always start from a simple geometric pattern and then it evolves into a complex piece of art through the hands of an artist/designer. (source)

I love the possibilities of paper. Indeed, I once did a little blog series entitled “The possibilities of paper.” where I waxed poetic on plain white paper as my favorite inspiration for a quick/simple creative activity. (Click here to learn how to make a seven sided star, snowflakes and a scroll (one of my most popular posts!)

Happy Friday! Hope you are all enjoying October in your neck of the woods!

Headed to the tailgate

Headed to the tailgate

Ok so I’m pretty sure this was the first actual tailgate I’ve ever attended. I wasn’t totally antisocial in high school but football games weren’t exactly my scene. My attendance at pep rallies and the like was usually an exhausting exercise of peevish skepticism. I guess I was too cynical or too cool for school or something. But as it turns out, this whole football thing; parades and tailgates and knights on horseback; is totally entertaining and fun when you’re not so busy rolling your eyes! While I still have a few years (3!) to vicariously relive the easy breezy, conventional version of high school through our progeny, thus far, I am enjoying it!

Fish huts

Fish huts

Those structures are called fish huts, or fish shacks or fish cabins…The Department of Natural Resources, as the Florida state environmental agency was called in the mid 1980s, believed the structures were navigational hazards and destructive to sea grasses.  And they also believed that since they had no plumbing, the people using them as bunk houses were likely creating sanitation problems.  So the state started burning them down.  Locals who wanted to preserve the fish huts were able to debunk these concern, according to Gladys Schneider of Bokeelia.  She was hired as a consultant to compile the documentation needed to have the shanties declared historic.  So our fish huts are still with us and a number are listed on National Register of Historic Places. Hunting for bait…While we were in this spot we saw a small bonnethead shark (illegal to shoot; quite unsportsman-like to catch with a bow and arrow (it would be like shooting fish in a barrell) (couldn’t resist haha). We were searching for rays (the fishing guide called them skates but really they are Southern Stingrays).

Got one (actually 3!) ; and the fishing guide we went with shot a few more and then we were off...
