Woo hoo garden time!

Sampling a yard long bean (Chinese Red Noodle bean)

The tall plants with the purple tops are amaranth

So vibrant!

Sooo cute!

This tall maple maple tree has grown a lot since last year and is now shading a considerable part of the garden. It is the reason the sweet corn and sunflowers aren’t as tall as they should be. Even though I love how it looks, I think it’s got to go.

Amaranth seed head

Come on, it is time to go back inside!

Woa, you can grow your own quinoa??? I never even heard of that variety! How did you come about growing it? Thanks! Dana
Yes apparently you can haha! I saw it in the seed catalogue (rareseeds.com). We tried it last year but it was way too hot and never really grew the seed heads. We tried it again this year and it has done well (much milder summer than last). We eat it all the time so I thought it would be fun to see what the plants look like!
That is great! I will look for that. My family will not be too impressed, but I do like it! ;-)
:)
Wow I’ve never seen how quinoa grows! thanks!
Yeah it looks like a cross between sorghum and amaranth. The variety is called Cherry Vanilla which is quite appropriate for the color! I only have 3 plants, I think I might have accidentally pulled some up (the seedlings look almost identical to lamb’s quarter). I don’t think it grows well if temps get above 90, we’ve had a mild summer so it has done well!
Handsome puppy!
Thanks!
